Camel Milk Marketing Project
Labata Fantalle Organization is proud to have partnered with Gédéon Aventure in 2017 in the production of the documentary “Tribes XXI.” The documentary features Roba Bulga and Ibrahim Roba hosting Christian Karembeu, former French international footballer, who is introduced to the rich traditions, evolving modernity, and livelihoods of the Karrayyu community. The film highlights camel rearing as a central livelihood system, as well as the multiple social, economic, and environmental challenges the Karrayyu face in a rapidly changing world. As part of its long-standing commitment to pastoralist livelihoods, Labata Fantalle Organization, with financial and technical support from the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity, supported camel milk marketing cooperatives in the Karrayyu area. The project strengthened local capacities through training for primary producers and cooperative members on milk sanitation and hygiene, marketing, and record keeping. It also provided essential equipment, including milk containers and a transport truck, enabling the safe and efficient movement of camel milk from production sites to Addis Ababa. These achievements demonstrate how targeted, culturally grounded, and climate-smart interventions can enhance food security, income generation, and dignity for pastoralist communities. However, the needs remain immense. Pastoralists such as the Karrayyu continue to face increasing climate shocks, shrinking rangelands, market exclusion, and systemic marginalization. Labata Fantalle Organization calls upon the international community, development partners, and donors to scale up their support for similar initiatives that strengthen pastoralist livelihoods, protect indigenous knowledge systems, and build resilience in Ethiopia’s dryland areas. Sustained investment is critical to ensuring food and livelihood security, enabling pastoralists to adapt to harsh climatic and living conditions, and safeguarding their survival and cultural heritage.
