A Consultative Workshop on Karrayyu Michille Gada Group's Mid-term Power Transfer Conducted
November 01, 2024 (Adama), Labata Fantalle Organization in collaboration with partners conducted a consultative workshop on upcoming Gada Michille of Karrayyu with the support of a project “strengthening preservation of Indigenous cultural institutions and handcrafts skills” in collaboration with East Shewa Zone Culture and Tourism Office at the presence of key stakeholders from East Shewa Zone, Gada group representatives of nine (9) Districts of East Shewa Zone, representatives from Fantalle District, Karrayyu and Tuluma Gada groups and Community Elders. The workshop objective was to discuss on how stakeholders could collaboratively work together for the successful convening of upcoming “Buttaa Qalaa”, a half power term transfer of Gada Michille of Karrayyu that will be held in January 2024. Besides, the inauguration of a book written by Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU) in partnership with East Shewa Zone Culture and Tourism Office on Karrayyu Oromoo Gadaa System (Historical Ethnography) was conducted. The workshop has attended by 100(10F) participants from key stakeholders including Gada Leadership from Karrayyu and Tulama Oromos. Detailed discussion was held among the stakeholders on key stakeholders working together for the successfulness of Buttaa Qalaa ceremony of Karrayyu. Adde Sumayya Usman, the Head of East Shewa Zone Culture and Tourism Office has remarked that the government has given great emphasis to work on the preservation of indigenous culture and practices in general where in particular East Shewa Zone Culture and Tourism Office has given a due attention for Karrayyu Gada System, which endured different oppressive regimes and survived till today. Panel discussion led by East Shewa Zone Culture and Tourism Office was held among workshop participants and the workshop concluded by various action points and finally by Gada leaders’ blessings.
